After the Pirates (1-3) went up 2-0 in the first inning, they were held to just one hit and no runs, as they were routed by the Seabreeze Sandcrabs in five innings 15-2 on Tuesday, Feb. 16, at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex.
“We did not pitch the ball today,” coach Jim Perry said. “We walked 13 people. They scored 15 runs on eight hits and 13 walks. I don’t want to take anything away from them. When we threw it in there, they hit it. But, that was pretty much the game right there.”
Seabreeze used a four-run first inning and an eight-run fourth to put the game out of reach. Perry expressed how he expected a better start to the season but is glad his team’s trails are happening early.
“Baseball is a marathon, not a sprint. You just continue to go to work and not lose focus of where we want to be at the end. We want to be playing well at the end. If we were playing outstanding baseball right now, then flop at end, it would be a moot point. But, in my opinion, it’s better that, now, we figure out where we’re at, what we need to do and make some adjustments, and come April, turn it on. That’s what we need to do.”
The Pirates can next redeem themselves in a rematch at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, at Matanzas.
