Little pirates and princesses flashed their tickets and demanded entrance to the Fairytale Ball in the Old Kings Elementary School media center on Thursday, Feb. 18. All of the school’s students and their families were invited to the Pirates and Princesses Carnival, which was held to raise money for the kid’s school supplies and end of year field trips. Each grade level at OKES hosted a fun carnival booth game that offered candy and toy prizes.
“Last year the theme was Enchanted Evening, and only the girls really dressed up. This year we wanted to make sure the boys knew that this was for them too, so we themed the carnival Pirates and Princesses.”

Outside and away from the games, the students spent the evening sipping pirate punch in the courtyard and watching as Principal Benjamin Osypian suddenly drop into a dunking booth. A special petting zoo filled with rabbits, miniature horses and ducks was supplied by Noah’s Landing.
“This carnival gave us a great opportunity to raise money for the kids, and get the families together for a fun filled night.” said Kim Weeks, Old Kings Elementary media specialist and event coordinator. “I am pleased to say we have received tremendous community support and donations from local businesses to improve the students learning experiences.”
Each grade level had their own hidden agenda behind their carnival game. The fifth graders set up a Seven Dwarf Ring Toss, to raise money towards an end of the year field trip to the Jacksonville Museum of Science and History, while the kindergarteners held a Bippity-Boppity Boutique to raise money for an in-school petting zoo for the students.
“It can prove difficult to bring dozens of kindergarteners on a field trip,” laughed an OKES kindergarten teacher. “So we decided it may be best to bring the field trip here.”
Throughout the night each grade level collected the tickets received from the students that played each game. Each grade was then rewarded with funds based on the effort put into their carnival games.
“The tickets collected for the Fairytale Ball will determine how much money will go towards buying new books for the media center,” Weeks said. “We keep a wish list of all the books the kids request to checkout throughout the year. Whenever we receive the funds those are the books we purchase first.”
