Beware those checks

12:30 p.m. — 1200 Block of West Granada Boulevard

Fraud. The victim said she met someone called “Pastor” on a babysitting website. He told her he wanted to open a babysitting service in the area and wanted her as an associate.

She accepted, and the suspect sent her a check for $2,495.50. The check was from an unrelated business.

He told her to cash the check, keep $500 for herself and send the remaining money to a list of supposed business associates.

The bank later told her the check was fraudulent and wanted the money back. The bank was determined to be the victim of the fraud.

Where did that pipe come from?

12:34 a.m. — 100 Block of South Nova Road

Possession of Paraphernalia. The officer noticed that a pickup was sitting in a shopping center parking lot for a long time with its lights on, and it did not appear to be occupied.

The officer found that two males were sleeping in the truck and one had an open warrant for failure to appear and possession of paraphernalia.

As the suspect was asked to exit the vehicle, it was discovered that he had been sitting on a small, clear plastic pipe. He was read his Miranda rights and agreed to talk.

He said he had no knowledge of the pipe being in the vehicle. The officer identified it as likely being used to smoke cocaine, and the end was burned.

Both were charged with possession of paraphernalia. Five Florida driver’s licenses were found in the glove compartment and the driver was also arrested for possession of ID cards.

Quick get-away

1:24 a.m. — 700 Block of West Granada Boulevard

Burglary. The officer was dispatched to an apartment complex in reference to an alarm.

The door had fresh pry marks but was secure. The rest of the building also appeared secure. The inside of the building was undisturbed except a 42-inch screen television was missing from the wall.

Surveillance video showed a suspect with a cloth over their face, wearing gloves and carrying a crowbar. After using the crowbar to enter, he immediately removed the TV and ran toward a nearby parking lot.
