A woman and a 7-year-old boy were injured the night of Saturday, Feb. 20 after a car struck their Jeep from behind on I-95 in northern Flagler County, causing the Jeep to flip and land on its roof. The car's driver has been charged in association with the crash.
Apopka, Florida resident Deborah Pigue, 57, was driving the 2015 Jeep Compass north in the outside lane of I-95 north of the U.S.1 interchange at about 9:20 p.m. She had two passengers: a 7-year-old Sorrento, Florida boy, and an 8-year-old Palm Coast boy.
Orlando resident Alex Curley, 24, sped up behind the Jeep in a 2002 Cadillac Eldorado, but "failed to negotiate the slower speed of (the Jeep)," according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.
Curley steered the Cadillac left to avoid rear-ending the Jeep, but the Cadillac's front passenger side struck the Jeep's rear driver's side corner.
The Jeep overturned across the road's northbound lanes and landed on its roof on the inside northbound lane. The Cadillac drove off the road onto the grassy area east of the roadway.
The 7-year-old Sorrento boy had serious injuries from the crash, and Pigue had minor injuries. Rescuers took them both to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach. The 8-year-old Palm Coast boy had no injuries.
Curley was not injured. He has been charged with careless driving, according to the FHP report.
FHP troopers closed the inside and center northbound lanes of I-95 until the crash investigation ended at 11:15 p.m.
