They have served in the Matanzas wrestling program for the last four years, and are currently reaping the benefits of their labor. But, in a few short months, district champions Maverick Dennis, Rocky Samples, Carter Goodman and Tristan Kraus will move on to serve a bigger purpose, when they each raise their right hands and pledge an oath to the United States Marine Corps.
“I'm proud that they have made the commitment to serve this great country,” coach John White said. “It takes a special person to be a Marine. I think the sport of wrestling has prepared them for this; each one knows what it's like to push their bodies to the brink. They also have a strong sense of team/family. I know each of these young men will be great Marines, and I'm proud to have been a small part of their lives.”
The four joined the wrestling program as freshmen and formed a bond throughout their high school years. They will most likely finish the season as the most successful wrestling team, and hope to serve their country together, though they may serve thousands of miles apart. Here are their reasons for joining the service, more precisely, the Marine Corps.
Dennis
I wanted to join the Marines because I wanted to open up more opportunities to myself and do something great for our country. I also want to make my parents really proud.
Samples
I want to be a part of something bigger than myself and challenge myself to a whole new level. Since my dad was a Marine, he instilled the dream into me to become one at a young age, and I want to live up to that.
Goodman
I joined the Marines to take on a challenge that I knew wasn't going to be easy. I wanted to serve my country and join the brotherhood that only Marines share.
Kraus
Coming from a line of family in the military, it was either college or military. My mom expects something great out of each of her kids, especially me. I didn't want to be like everyone else, with a regular job, still stuck in the same place. I want to challenge myself, explore different countries. I'm made for this, and I can't wait to join the brotherhood and serve my country.
