Shannon McLeish, who serves on the board of several organizations, has announced she intends to run for City Commission Zone 2, the seat currently held by Troy Kent.
Pointing to her community involvement, McLeish said she would be an active commissioner.
“My goals are to see our neighborhoods continue to recover and thrive and to help find solutions for the empty businesses creating drag in our core downtown district as well. I am dedicated to preserving the history and character of Ormond Beach, to enhancing our public holdings, parks and our core downtown district for the benefit of all of us,” she wrote in an email.
McLeish, a Florida native, and her husband moved to Ormond Beach in 2001 and have two children. They own and operate The Pocket Jeweler, 30 W. Granada Blvd.
McLeish is on the board of the Volusia Flagler Homeless Continuum of Care, Volusia County Affordable Housing Committee, Citizens For Ormond Beach and Ormond Beach MainStreet.
She has not held elected office and in 2012 lost to Doug Daniels in a race for the Volusia County Council.
In her campaign for the County Council, her discussions about the foreclosure crisis and its effect on the community helped to start the Citizens For Ormond Beach effort to improve the abandoned and deteriorating house situation in the city, she said.
She said in a phone interview that she believes in service, transparency and accountability to the public.
“I love Ormond Beach,” she said. “It’s a beautiful city and I care what happens to it. I’m interested in doing what I can.”
