Rows of new fitness machines are awaiting exercisers, and they should be busy soon, judging by the large crowd at the grand opening of the expanded Center for Health and Wellness at Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center, 305 Memorial Medical Parkway, Suite 100, Daytona Beach.

The wellness center was originally built in 2014 for cardiac rehabilitation and diabetes education, as well as outpatient therapy. It has recently been doubled in size with a 6,500-square-foot expansion and is open to the public for a membership fee.

It now includes cardio equipment, strength-training machines and weights; group exercise classes, such as spin class and yoga; and educational programs.

It’s considered a “high-end” fitness center, according to Darlinda Copeland, Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center senior vice president and chief operating officer.

“This wellness center is a place residents who are not patients themselves can go to improve their overall health and wellbeing,” she said.

“We want to keep you healthy.”

Howard Perch, executive director of rehab services and administrator at Florida Hospital Oceanside.

The expansion cost $1.3 million, which was raised by the Florida Hospital Memorial Foundation, the fund-raising arm of the hospital.

“It’s a gift to the community,” said John Olivari, foundation chairman.

The facility reflects the trend in health care, which emphasizes wellness, rather than just taking care of people when they are sick, said Howard Perch, executive director of rehab services and administrator at Florida Hospital Oceanside.

“We want to keep you healthy,” he said.

Karen Petersen, an instructor at the facility, called the “Wellbeats” system in the workout rooms an “exciting option” for members. A member can take part in a group exercise class at any time, by selecting a video of an instructor-led class.

Free child care is available at certain hours on weekdays.
