Ormond Beach police investigators reported Jan. 6 that they have arrested Michael Dakota Phillips, 19, 426 Andrews St., in the Dec. 27 stabbing at 521 Andrews St. Phillips was arrested at 102 S. Peninsula Drive, Daytona Beach, according to the statement. He has been charged with two counts of attempted first degree murder and burglary with assault or battery. The total bail for all of the charges is $500,000.
On Dec. 27, two Ormond Beach residents were attacked in their home at 521 Andrews St. Shelly Phillips, 27, and Adam Phillips, 30, both received multiple stab wounds. They were transported to Halifax Medical Center and two small children in the home were turned over to a family friend.
The suspect is not related to the victims.
The attacker left the scene before police arrived at 5:03 a.m. after a 911 call. They had to break open the front door to enter. They found that a side garage door was open and the door from the garage to the house was unlocked.
On Dec. 28, Michael Phillips was stopped at the corner of Andrews Street and Putnam Avenue by a police officer. A field interview card was filled out and his photo was taken. It was noted that he had a large bandage on his right pinkie finger.
On Dec. 30, officers met with Shelly Phillips at the hospital and completed a composite sketch of the attacker. She repeated several times that he had sad eyes, according to the report.
Also on Dec. 30, officers responded to 426 Andrews St. to follow up on an unrelated burglary where Michael Phillips was listed as a suspect. The officer asked him if he was the one who stabbed the victims on Dec. 27, and he said no. They asked him how he cut his finger, and he said it happened when he was fixing a knife.
After the sketch was released, several people came forward to talk to police.
Two people said they saw the sketch and said it was the suspect, Michael Phillips. They said he walks around the Andrews Street area at all hours of the night. One of the witnesses said she had conversations with the suspect about him having PTSD and having to kill people in combat. She said she believes he is dangerous.
It could not be confirmed by the Observer that he had combat experience.
On Jan. 5, the detectives visited the home of Michael Phillips again. They observed dried blood on the outside of the door frame. While the officers were there, Jessica Phillips, the suspect’s mother, arrived at the home.
She said she lives at the home, and the suspect, who is listed as transient on the police report, was at the home the morning of the stabbing incident, Dec. 27. He was there for a couple of nights during the holidays. She said she was awakened by the sound of her son vomiting, and then heard the rescue helicopter.
The suspect’s father, Michael Phillips, contacted police and positively identified the sketch as his son.
Shelly Phillips was shown a photo lineup, using the suspects’s driver’s license, on Jan. 6, and she began shaking and crying and positively identified Michael Phillips as the attacker. She said she could never forget his eyes.
Adam Phillips said he had blood in his eyes when attacked and could not identify the attacker. Later, he identified the photo taken in the field interview as the attacker.
Both of the victims said they do not know the suspect and do not understand why he would hurt them.
