"I was taking pictures on and around forward fire support base Bronco where I was stationed when I encountered this infantryman, or 'grunt,'" said Peter Sorensen. "I was moved by his intensity, the solemnity and serenity of the scene."
"Spot On" by David Karner, was filmed at European Village in Palm Coast.
"Animals" by David Dastmalchian, is a captivating film about addiction. The film previously won a special jury prize at the South by Southwest Film Festival.
Peter Sorensen snapped this photograph of a heavily damaged church from the back of a truck traveling north on QL1, or Highway 1, to a forward fire support base in the fall of 1969 in South Vietnam.
Peter Sorensen took this photograph at the end of his tour in October of 1970 while standing in line with a group of Americal soldiers awaiting processing for return to the United States.
The Flagler Film Festival received a record breaking 150 film submissions from over a dozen different countries across the world. Of those submitted, almost 50 films will be featured in blocks separated by the following categories: comedy, drama, horror, documentary and anything goes.
“We feel that every film we are screening is deserving of an audience,” said Director Kathie Barry. “We hope that everyone will find these selections educational, inspirational, evocative, or simply entertaining.”
Many noteworthy films will be shown in support of local or international causes. Returning local filmmaker, Mike Ciancuilli, has produced "Wave of the Winter," to raise funds for the local Tommy Tant Memorial. Whereas producer Ruth Hellerman has returned with a sequel to her last year’s production “Water.” This year’s film, “Nature,” is a synopsis about the importance of treating Earth’s natural resources with care.
“We have several films which deal with racial issues in the past and present day,” said Barry.
The film preview "All Black Towns: An Endangered People's History" will be shown, produced by Kari Barber. The preview is of a documentary that is still in the making.

Student film "Time Simply Passes” by Ty Flowers is based on a criminal case in Florida. The film explores the trial and imprisonment of an African American man who was wrongly convicted of murder.
“A lot of hard work and talent go into the making of independent films and the selections we have this year are truly worthy of a large audience,” said Barry. “Having their films featured at a festival is a great accomplishment for those involved in its production. It is equivalent to an artist’s work being displayed in a gallery, or an author’s book getting published.”
