A road rage incident Jan. 11 started when one driver cut off another, but escalated to a gun threat.

Palm Coast resident Alfredo Rodriguez, 61, was driving north on U.S. 1 at about 2:45 p.m. with his wife Pamela Kelly, 59, in the passenger seat when an SUV passed him on the left and then moved back right in front of him, forcing him to slow down, Rodriguez later told deputies.

Both vehicles turned east onto Palm Coast Parkway and stopped at the traffic light at Pine Lakes Parkway, where the SUV driver began giving Rodriguez the finger, Rodriguez said. Rodriguez "returned the gesture," according to a Flagler County Sheriff's Office case report.

The light turned green and both cars continued east on Palm Coast Parkway and stopped again at Belle Terre Parkway, where Rodriguez and the SUV driver cursed at each, although their windows were up. The SUV driver then "displayed a handgun in a holster," and pointed the gun toward Rodriguez and Kelly, according to the case report.

Rodriguez tried to pull away but again ended up stopped near the SUV at the light at Pine Cone Drive, where a passenger of the SUV got out, approached Rodriguez's car and "began banging on the window, yelling for him to get out of the vehicle," according to the case report. As he tried to pull away, Rodriguez told deputies, the SUV driver squirted a bottle "of what appeared to be water" into the car, hitting Kelly, according to the report.

There are charges pending against the suspects for battery and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to the case report.
