Costello to challenge for U.S. House

Fred Costello, former city commissioner and mayor of Ormond Beach, has announced he intends to run for the U.S. House of Representative, District 6. He is currently representative for District 25 in the Florida House, which includes Ormond Beach.

“I will focus 100% during our Legislative Session on my responsibilities in the Florida House,” he said in an email. “Our campaign will gear up after Session is over (March 11).”

District 6 at one time swept through north-central Florida, but has been remapped so that it now includes most of Volusia County. The current representative is Ron DeSantis, who is vacating the seat to run for the U.S. Senate.

“Many have encouraged me to again run for U.S. Congress,” Costello wrote. “They appreciate my core conservative values, principled leadership and believe I am uniquely qualified and well prepared to serve in Congress.”

After Costello announced his intentions on Jan. 14, Adam Barringer, former mayor of New Smyrna Beach, announced he is withdrawing from the race and would support Costello. In an email, he said he fears that a divided county would allow someone from outside winning the race, so he was asking his supporters to endorse Costello.

“Adam is a true selfless patriot,” Costello said.

Costello said he would serve a maximum of eight years of “self-imposed term limited service in Washington.”

If elected, he would focus on national security, state’s rights including returning education policy to the states, reigning in executive actions by President Obama and supporting FairTax, which would include elimination of the IRS.

Food truck rally to start

A local food truck rally is planned for the fourth Tuesday of every month beginning 5-9 p.m., Jan. 26, at Ormond Beach Brewing Company, 301 Division Ave. The local brewer is partnering with the Good Food Truck and Callan Group Communications.

"What better way to spend an otherwise boring Tuesday night than with local, fresh brews and homemade grub all in one crazy awesome spot," says Justin Robinson, owner of Ormond Brewing. Three breweries and three food trucks will take part in the rally.

Coined the “Railroad District”, the rally is meant to bring more attention to the businesses located off of Division Avenue in Ormond Beach, according to a Callan Group spokeswoman.

Call Diane Michael with Callan Group at 538-1083 or Paige Harmon with Ormond Brewing Co. at 256-3904.
