“Today we remind the community that we stand together as a unit, and that we will not be divided by the color of our skin. It is important for us all to instill this idea into our youth, so the sacrifices others made to ensure equality among people will never be forgotten.” LaTroy Eirvin, Junior Warden of Beehive Lodge 779
The community came together to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Bunnell, with community awards and a unity march starting at the Carver Community Center. The procession was led through the residential streets in Bunnell by the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard, followed by Grand Marshal Evalena Williams.
Residents stood in driveways with their children, who scramble to collect the candy being handed out by the fistful.
“I am grateful the community recognizes the significance of MLK Day,” said Bunnell Resident Tiffany H. “My children are learning early that equality is important, and are encouraged to be friends with everyone, no matter their ethnicity.”
Many local churches, and organizations participated in the parade along with the Bunnell Police Department, the Flagler Citizens Observer Patrol and the FCSO Mounted Patrol Unit.
“We are all one people,” Flagler County Sheriff Jim Manfre said. “Therefore we should be viewed by our concept of character, instead of the shade of our skin. Today we celebrate those who have dedicated their lives to ensure equality among people.”
