Evolution Health Club, 1 S. Old Kings Road, combined an open house for Mayor’s Fitness Challenge participants on Jan. 16 with a Family Fitness Bash celebrating their one-year anniversary.
A silent auction and food sales benefited Building Remarkable Communities Inc., a nonprofit organization headquartered in Volusia County that helps victims of domestic violence and works with companies and organizations to fight the problem.
Activities included outdoor volleyball, a bounce house and fitness demonstrations such as Vertifit, which combines aerial arts and yoga. Their actual anniversary was in November but the party was rained out.
“It’s a big ol’ playground.”
Pat Fanning, owner, Evolution Health Club
Pat Fanning, along with his son, Ryan, started the business in 2014 with a determination to “bring the club back” to the popularity it enjoyed in the 1980s when it was known as Omega 40.
At the Open House, Fanning said they have now grown to 950 members.
It’s been a busy year, he said. The 28,000-square-foot building had been neglected before they moved in, and they painted every room in the three-story structure. They filled 11 dumpsters with outdated equipment and refuse that had built up since 1978.
Their business model for growing the business included “crowd funding,” where people invested and became part-owners. Fanning said there are now 24 owners and more shares are available.
There are a variety of fitness options available, from wallyball to cardio rooms.
“It’s a big ol’ playground,” Fanning said.
One of the more popular classes is boxing boot camp, which includes weights, ground exercises such as pushups, cardio and three rounds with a heavy bag.
“You get a little bit of everything,” said Trainer Lindsay Gray, of Ormond-by-the-Sea. “The boxing builds your endurance.”
