“When the matches were tight, we found a way to separate from them. That was big, and that was key.”

Nothing to look at here, Pirate Nation. For now, the Flagler Palm Coast Bulldogs are still the county’s kings of the mat. FPC overpowered crosstown rival, Matanzas, 63-10 in a dual matches Wednesday, Jan. 20, at FPC.

“The kids wrestled really well,” coach Tom Bartolotta said. “They came out and were ready for this match.”

The Dawgs have owned the Pirates in their dual history, losing only twice over the years, but the Matanzas hopes to turn it fortune around in the upcoming years.

The next big event for both teams is the Flagler Rotary tournament, which will be held next weekend at FPC. The Bulldogs, who lost dual meets this season for the first time since Bartolotta became coach, were big winners and hope to repeat this season.

“We’ve struggled a little bit this year, but I think we’re gonna peaking now at the right time. I hope we can finish Top 3 in the tournament and get some champs. That would be great.”
