A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect in Flagler County until 5 p.m. Jan. 22, according to the National Weather Service.

A warning issue this morning was the highest for the area so far this season, and wind gusts might reach 50-70 mph, Flagler County Emergency Management Technician Bob Pickering said. Tornados can't be ruled out, he said.

"If there is a tornado warning issued, don't look around for the storm," Pickering said. "Seek shelter immediately."

The system is moving fast, so there is no risk of flooding, Pickering said.  Temperatures are expected to drop after 2 p.m. Jan. 22, and Jan, 23 is expected to be breezy and blustery, withe freeze possible the night of Jan. 23.
