All of my pets have been adopted. Are they perfect? In my eyes - of course! Here are my top 10 reasons to adopt instead of shop for a pet.

1. They need a home. Pretty simple, right?

2. Vaccines, and spay/neuter, and often microchips, are included in the adoption fee.

3. By adopting, you - yes - YOU, are reducing the number of pets that have to be euthanized. The euthanasia rate at Flagler Humane Society dropped from nearly 50% in 2011 to 8.5% in 2015.  (In 2011 FHS was receiving animals from animal control departments in Volusia County which increased their numbers significantly)

4. The number of animals being surrendered to the shelter has also decreased nearly 50% in the same time period.

5. You can get a specific breed if you can be patient. Kodi, the corgi, was adopted from the St. Augustine animal shelter when he was about six months old.

6. Adoption is healthy for everyone. As the bumper stickers say; “'Who Adopted Who?”

7. You made a difference in a life. Thanks to you, a pet that was no longer valued, had another chance at a loving home.

8. Put puppy mills out of business. Their numbers are decreasing slowly. Adopt, and continue the trend.

9. Peace of mind. Sometimes owners have no other choice, or the owner has died. If you adopt they know their animal is being cared for and loved.

10. A lifetime of stories. Each adoption has its own stories that are told and retold. These wonderful stories are only available to those who open their home to a homeless animal.
