A hand-scrawled sign was on the defunct, and deteriorating, gas station at the northwest corner of Granada Boulevard and Nova Road for a long time, saying, “Closed for remodeling.” The sign was apparently written in jest, as the building has recently been demolished. The Burger King Restaurant was also taken down, and a CVS Drug Store will be built on the site, according to a site plan submitted to the city last year.
A retired Volusia County deputy sheriff was carjacked about 5:50 p.m. on Jan. 27 at Olive Garden, 880 S. Atlantic Ave. He was injured and the suspect got away with his car, according to an Ormond Beach Police Department report.
Richard Conway, whose address was not listed, said he was in the back parking lot of the Olive Garden looking for a grease dumpster so he could dump some grease and oil.
While out of his car, he saw the suspect, described as a thin, black, teenage male, walk from a black SUV to his car. They made eye contact, and the suspect then jumped into the driver’s seat of the victim’s car, a 2016 Nissan Altima.
The victim ran to the car and grabbed the suspect, but the suspect drove way, according to the report. The victim was dragged a few feet before falling to the ground.
As he lay on the ground, the black SUV drove by him and then followed the stolen car down the road, the victim told police.
The victim told police he believes he left a loaded handgun in the car.
The victim had a head injury and was treated at the scene. He declined to go to the hospital.
