FPC alumnus gets first football head coaching job
Robert Paxia, a former Flagler Palm Coast football player and weightlifter, as well as a weightlifting coach and assistant football coach, has accepted his first head coaching job at Plant City High School.
Paxia joined the team as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach last May, and he helped increase the team’s offensive scoring by 10 points per game.
“This has been my goal for a very long time—to be a head football coach,” Paxia said
Paxia played fullback and guard as a Bulldog, and he also competed in weightlifting, where he won the FHSAA Class 2A State title in 2008.
He briefly played at Webber International University before an injury claimed his career, which directed him towards coaching. Paxia eventually transferred to Daytona State College and began coaching running backs with his alma mater.
After a few years, Paxia would then go on to serve as the offensive coordinator at Brooksville-Central High School, and then he took a defensive coordinator position at Starke-Bradford High School as the Tornadoes’ defensive coordinator, before coaching in Plant City.
“The game of football has given me so much, and to hopefully show these kids what it can do for them is an exciting and incredible feeling for me,” Paxia said.
Former MLB pro Bill Stein receives local Hall of Fame honors
Palm Coast resident and former Major League Baseball player Bill Stein was recently inducted
into the Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame for athletes from Brevard County.
“It feels great; this was unexpected but is a great honor for me,” said Stein in an interview.
Stein attended Cocoa High School, where he excelled in baseball before attending Southern Illinois University. From there, he went on to play for the St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago White Sox, Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers.
Stein played 959 games and recorded 44 homers, a .267 batting average and 311 runs as a primary pinch hitter.
Greens for Teens program in search of young great golfer
Flagler residents Renny Roker and Christopher Bell, the golf pro at Palm Harbor, have launched Greens for Teens—a junior golf program that focuses on increasing grade point averages while decreasing golf averages.
The program will host its first tournament, the 2016 Greens for Teens International Championship, beginning Friday, July 7, and will conclude on Sunday, July 10, at the Palm Harbor Golf Club. The first event will be a kickoff barbeque event and an AM/AM event prior to
the 36-hole event.
Every competitor will be invited as well as individual participants and company sponsors. There will also be a special guest panel—including college coaches—discussing what it takes to get to the next level.
On July 8th there will be an AM/AM event where individual participants and company sponsors will have the opportunity to play with the junior golfers who will be competing in the 36-hole event over the weekend. This will be a shot gun scramble event where the junior golfer will play his or her own ball. The cost to play as an individual sponsor is $150, which includes the BBQ kickoff, golf on the eighth along with lunch. Company sponsors will be able to participate in the AM/AM event and BBQ event based on their sponsorship level. Sponsors will also be able to take advantage of exposure at the course and through TV based on sponsorship level.
Juniors from junior high through college are encouraged to come out and compete. The cost for the junior to play in this event will be $150 which include two practice rounds—one being during the AM/AM event, a ticket to the BBQ event, entry into the AM/AM event and the lunch after, and entry into the 36-hole event.
