Two hair salons and one school are holding separate promotions in Palm Coast to help kids get ready for school.
2 of a Kind Hair Studio, at 232 St. Joe Plaza Drive, is doing a promotion for the first time this year. All school-age children are welcome to come and get a free haircut from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 8. There will also be music and food at the event.
"We're trying to find ways to give back to the community," owner Valarie Roberts said. "It takes a community to raise children. We all have to do our part."
Meanwhile, Olga's Hair Salon, at 269 Old Moody Blvd., across from Flagler Palm Coast High School, is giving free haircuts to homeless children only. It's the sixth year owner Olga Hernandez has done the promotion. Children are identified with the help of the school district, and Publix is donating lunch. For this promotion, an appointment is necessary, so please call 263-2977 if you are interested, or if you know a family in need. Coincidentally, the haircuts will be given at the same time as the promotion at 2 of a Kind: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 8.
Flagler Technical Institute is also doing free back-to-school haircuts at the upcoming Unity in the Community Day at FTI, next to FPC. The event will be 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 30. FTI will be showcasing all the programs they offer for continuing education. Food and children's activities. Free.
The storefront next to 2 of a Kind is a bakery called St. Joe Bakery. The windows are dark, the phone is disconnected, and the bakery's Facebook page posted a simple message on July 12: "St Joe Bakery & Catering is closed." There are 15 comments from fans of the page asking why, but no answer yet.
Emmanuel's Closet will be hosting "Project Polo" at 9 a.m. sharp on Saturday, July 23, at 1000 Palm Coast Parkway SW, in the two-story building of Parkway Plaza, near Wells Fargo. School polo shirts (gently used and new) will be given to families in need.
United Way Women's Initiative of Flagler donated $1,000 to purchase new polo shirts. TeamWork Graphics LLC is assisting with the purchase and is taking no profit from the transaction. The clothing closet is affiliated with Parkview Baptist Church and has about 40 volunteers.
Donations of polo shirts and school spirit shirts are accepted at Emmanuel's Closet by Monday, July 18.
