With tears streaming down his face, Kenny Roberts stared into the doctor’s eyes and asked, “Do you believe in God?” He was looking for a miracle for his son, Isaiah, who had just been diagnosed with juvenile osteoporosis.
At 6 months old, Kenny and his wife, Sarah, discovered that Isaiah was sick with what they perceived was a cold. After taking him to the hospital, they found out he had pneumonia. But, when the doctors ran X-rays for his entire body and discovered that he had the rare disease.
“Without chemotherapy and bone marrow transfusion, they told me he would've possibly died in less than a year,” Roberts said. “And, even with both operations, the doctors told us that he would most likely lose his hearing, eye sight and never walk, because his bones would grow out of place.”
In response to Robert’s question, the doctor said, “Yes, I do,” which led to Roberts saying, “Well, we heard what you said, but now we have to talk to our doctor, Dr. Jesus.” And doctor replied, “That will work.”
As the Roberts family prepared for Isaiah’s surgery, they notified their church family, who in return alarmed all the churches in their network — over 100 — who began to pray for Isaiah.
Sarah had to take Isaiah to Pittsburgh because there were no doctors in Florida or around the area to handle his condition, and they stayed there for eight months, apart from Kenny and their oldest son, Kenny Jr.
“This was the hardest time for us,” Kenny said, “seeing all the sores on his body as he lost his hair. I couldn’t be there with my son and my wife, and she had to see all of this. But, in spite of all of this, we kept our faith in God."
Kenny and Sarah’s faith in God have seemed to pay off, along with the hard work from the Pittsburgh doctors, because now it would be difficult to pick out Isaiah in a group of healthy kids. They recently returned to Pittsburgh after more than two years, so the doctors could check on Isaiah’s progress, and the doctors were shocked to know that he didn’t have any physical defects.
He walks, runs, plays, hears and sees. There’s nothing about his life that is not normal, except the fact that he’s the size of a 5-year-old at age 3, another miracle, according to the doctors.
“I believe God has truly healed him completely,” Kenny said. “He’s a healthy young boy. He was in good hands because he was in God’s hands.” He plans to let Isaiah play football next year.
Worth repeating: “He was in good hands because he was in God’s hands.”
