Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Adam H. Putnam announced Bunnell Elementary’s garden as a Golden Shovel winner for “Best Revitalized Garden.”

Schools awarded in this category, must have revitalized either a dormant garden or a garden that has shown improvement, following a revitalization.

“School gardens bring the classroom outside, and allow students to gain a hands-on understanding of where their food comes from,” Putnam said in a news release.

The on-campus gardens are part of the BES Flagship Program, “Green Technologies,” and is where hands-on learning takes place. Students learn the basics of planting vegetables and herbs, which are harvested and cooked. Students then learn about hydroponic and aquaponic systems, inside the school’s greenhouse.

Teams from Bunnell Elementary School have been invited, for three consecutive years, to take part in the NFL’s Fuel Up to Play 60 Gridiron Breakfast Challenge (winning the competition two of the three years). They used products from the school garden in the competitions.

The garden project was funded through a Flagler County Education Foundation Innovation grant.
