Man reports burglary, deputy checks home and finds weed

2:20 p.m. First block of Raintree Place. Residential burglary: A 24-year-old man got a notification through his cell phone that his home burglary alarm had gone off, and he called the Sheriff's Office without entering the house, concerned that a burglar might still be inside. But when deputies arrived and checked the house, he found he had another problem: a cop asking him about that weed, glass pipe and grinder he'd left sitting in plain view in the master bedroom.

A window to master bedroom was broken and the house ransacked, but nothing was obviously missing — including valuables, the deputy noted — so the deputy asked the man if he stored other drugs or contraband in the house that may have attracted thieves. The man said no, "and that the suspected marijuana and paraphernalia located in his bedroom belonged to him and was for personal use only," according to the deputy's report. A deputy confiscated the glass pipe, grinder and weed for destruction. The deputy did not arrest the victim.

The man called the Sheriff's Office after deputies left, and said he'd found a small purple box from his bedroom in the woods outside the home. It had contained jewelry belonging to a woman who lived at the house. He found it all, except for a $150 matching silver bracelet and necklace pair. A $20 black "jewelry tree" that held some jewelry was also missing, he said.

'Man cave' catches fire

3:14 a.m. First block of Felter Lane. Structure fire. Deputies arrived to a home fire and checked with family members who lived in the home. They all got out safely. A 41-year-old resident said he'd fallen asleep on a couch in the garage, which he'd converted to a "man cave," and awoke to the sound of his cooler falling to the ground and the sight of the garage's inner wall on fire.

The man said he'd initially started filling buckets to douse the fire, but got back to the garage and saw that it had grown. He gathered his family outside and called emergency services. When deputies arrived, the garage was emitting smoke. The fire department quickly came and put out the fire.

The man told a deputy he'd had three TV sets and a sound system plugged into a single outlet on the wall that had caught fire. A deputy checking the area after the flames were extinguished found that the "cooler" the man had referred to was a mini-fridge, also plugged into the same outlet. Dumping water on an electrical fire can be deadly, because the water can conduct the electricity to the person trying to put out the flames. The family told deputies they would spend the rest of the evening at another family member's house.
