One by one, the names of all 167 kindergarten students at Bunnell Elementary School were read into a microphone for the benefit of a standing-room-only crowd at a graduation ceremony held June 1 in the cafeteria. As their names were read, the students showed their personalities by curtseying or bowing or waving to their parents and grandparents.
But Principal Richard Dupont stopped the ceremony while teacher Ruby Brudey was reading the names on her list. He presented one student with a perfect-attendance certificate and announced that Teyana Lemon was the only kindergarten student in the school who never missed a class period and was never late to school for the entire year.
With a big smile, Teyana held up the certificate as her family cheered for her.
"If the school's open, she's going to be there," Teyana's mother, Monique Lemon, said after the ceremony.
