Flagler Technical Institute will provide remedial education for CareerSource Flagler Volusia One-Stop students under a new partnership between the two institutions.
"It’s a very exciting opportunity presented to us under the guise of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act," FTI Director Kevin McCarthy told Flagler County School Board members at a board meeting June 8.
"In essence, what this (memorandum of understanding) is saying is that One-Stop will identfy potential customers who need remediation; we will take them right across the street; we’ll holler out the windows, ‘Hey, we’re over here,’ and enroll them in applied academics for adult education. ... We’ll provide flexible service to support the needs of potential customers who will then go back to One-Stop."
For example, McCarthy said, a student who goes to CareerSource and takes a Test of Adult Basic Education that shows they need a remedial class can then go to FTI for that class before returning to CareerSource.
"This really is a great benefit ... for our community, because a customer comes in and needs remediation, gets the remediation that they need, and then they become eligible for a job-traininig program to go right into the workforce. ... It’s a great circle that we’ve created here that will then definitely positively impact the economic development of Flagler County."
