The Jewish Federation of Volusia and Flagler Counties recently received pledges of $15,000 in matching donations to buy backpacks filled with school supplies for local needy schoolchildren.

According to a press release, the Timothy G. Kurpa Revocable Trust pledged $5,000 and the estate of the late Dr. Beatrice Silverman pledged $10,000 to match donations dollar-for-dollar for the school supplies. The federation seeks to raise $30,000 by July 1 for the project.

Last year, the federation provided 7,000 of the backpacks last year to local disadvantaged students in elementary, middle and high schools. It hopes to provide the same number this year.

"Over the last 20 consecutive years, we have been able to provide over 88,000 local disadvantaged students with much needed school supplies,” said Federation Executive Director Gloria Max. "One hundred percent of donations are used for the backpacks and school supplies because the Federation pays all administrative expenses."

Send tax-deductible donations to:

Jewish Federation School Supply Kits, 470 Andalusia Ave., Ormond Beach, FL 32174-7502, or call 672-0294.
