Palm Coast City Councilman Bill McGuire may move out of state before his term of office ends. McGuire had announced after his wife Sandie died in January that he would not seek reelection, and that he planned to move to Missouri to be with family.
"Without Sandie here, there's nothing for me in the city, and I do intend to go back to where my family is," he said at a City Council meeting June 21.
McGuire said he is selling his house, and has a closing tentatively planned for July 29. The new owner will then have the right to take possession.
"If I can stay beyond that, I will," he said at the meeting. "But it does not look like I will make it till November."
McGuire said he will keep the City Council and City Manager Jim Landon updated. McGuire represents Palm Coast City Council District 1. He was elected in 2011.
According to the City Charter, if a council member leaves before their term ends, the Palm Coast City Council must appoint someone from their district to fill the seat within 30 days of the vacancy. There is nothing in the charter that would bar the council from appointing someone who is currently running for the seat, City Clerk Virginia Smith said. The current candidates for the District 1 seat are Robert Cuff, Troy DuBose, Sims Jones and Arthur McGovern Jr.
