The halls of Tomoka United Methodist Church were a lot darker than usual this week, making some of the kids who attended Cave Quest a little nervous.
"We had some toddlers who were very unsure at first," Pastor Brian Johnson said. "But the camp is all about how when we're in the dark and scared, God gives us hope. It helps the kids deal with what they're afraid of."
Last year, the vacation bible school only had about 30 kids, but for reasons unknown to the church's staff, this year their attendance more than doubled to 80 kids. Johnson thinks it may have had to do with the theme, which they borrowed from First United Methodist Church.
"Kids in Florida don't know a lot about caves," he laughed. "The surf theme is kind of the norm."
During the week-long day camp, the kids learned Bible themes, did science projects and learned some cave-themed lessons at Imagination Station.
"We've covered geodes and cave snot (bacteria that hangs from the walls and ceilings of caves)," said Sue Small-Kreider, volunteer. "We talk to kids about thinking beyond what they can see visually."
