When the children were growing up we had a 96-pound golden retriever named Murphy. Murphy was a “gift” from “friends” but that's another article. It seems I am always being “gifted” – yes Kodi and Buddy I am talking about you.
Murphy lived with us in Virginia and the strangest thing used to happen in the living room. We would leave the house and when we came back a round green pillow would be in the middle of the living room floor. Every – single – time.
None of the children would take credit for this strange behavior and I wondered what the thought process was, leaving this one pillow dead center in the middle of the room. A mystery to be sure.
There was only one “person” left in the house when we closed the door – Murphy. So one day as soon as the door was closed I darted to the front window to see Murphy, pillow in mouth, hoovering over “the” spot, looking up to see me. BUSTED. His way of saying, “I don't appreciate being left alone” I guess.
Shadow, the first dog I adopted from the Flagler Humane Society, was a Labrador who was able to get me to do something my mother never could – pick up my shoes. I went through quite a few shoes, only one shoe of a pair would be destroyed, and only the ones I had taken off when I got home. I suspect the “reasoning” was, if she chewed my shoe I couldn't leave.
Today I found something I can't quite explain. One of my Palm Coast Observer business cards, chewed in half down to the “s” in Observer.
It was left where Buddy likes to sit on the couch. So what is he telling me? Is it an editorial comment or do these cards have flavor? How curious am I to know?
We were just given new, redesigned business cards. Maybe he doesn't like the red backing with white lettering. Perhaps the boss needs to consult with my dogs before making future changes.
