Pull quote: “It should be motivational for everyone to see a kid, who had brain surgery a week ago walk out and throw an opening pitch. Inspirational!”
TIM BAUGHER, president of Flagler Baseball
In its inaugural spring baseball season, Flagler Baseball welcomed more participants than it received in the fall season, on Saturday, Mar. 5, at the Flagler County Recreation Area.
Among the distinguished guest, such as county commissioners and other government leaders, the league acknowledged triple amputee Rajesh Durbal, who shared an inspirational message, and then it brought out three young cancer fighters – Brayden Lane, Cameron Fulling and Ryan Dudley -- to throw the first pitches.
First up was Brayden Lane, who has been battling cancer. Lane was healthy enough to play this season, and, at his first plate appearance, he smashed the first pitch to reach first base. Lane is back in school, and his mother says she tries to give him normal days as much as possible. Dudley, a Matanzas ball player, and Fulling had just got out of brain surgery, so they are not allowed to play.
“It’s got to be about more than just baseball, more about sports,” said Tim Baugher, the league’s president. “We gotta give back to the community, and we gotta give back to our kids.”
