The Leadership Flagler Class 23 had a day full of construction and yard work at the Family Life Center’s domestic violence shelter last week. The big build day was on Saturday, March 5, with the mulch being added on Monday, March 7, completing the project.
The team expanded the back yard from 45 by 55 square feet to 80 by 124 square feet, all fenced in for safety and privacy.
The yard was leveled and added a new paver and stone entry into the house. Paths of crushed concrete for walking and riding bikes were also created.
Landscaping included adding a new butterfly garden with a bench and birdbath, and additional landscaping along two sides of the yard.
On Friday, March 4, four members of the class relocated the existing play set (which had been repainted by a local car body shop). A new swing set, the existing play set, and a covered picnic area, were installed on Saturday, March 5. The yard was also re sodded. Luckily 27 people volunteered on this very busy work day.
Leadership Flagler, a program of the Flagler County Chamber of Commerce, had support from President and CEO Rebecca DeLorenzo, and the entire Chamber family. Several employees and family members worked with the class to get the work done.
The class raised approximately $9,000 in funding and material donations from businesses and individuals helped to pay for the makeover.
“We want the Family Life Center staff and participants to know we have been honored to have been able to do this project and they will always hold a special place in our hearts.” said Cindi Lane, class member and Palm Coast community and marketing manager. “Our goal was to create a safe, peaceful and relaxing place for families to enjoy while they’re going through a difficult time in their lives, and we are excited to hear they are already using the improved backyard!”
