There's a pretty logical explanation for why ninth-grader Jahari Dorival wanted to join Mainland High School's drumline. He saw the movie "Drumline," and thought it looked cool.
A snare drummer for the 14-peice ensemble, Dorival said he and his bandmates came up with their latest routine — it's pretty much guaranteed to get you out of your seat — by combining new ideas with moves and beats from their previous show.
"It's kind of up groovy," he said, with his peers drumming on chairs in the background. "We switch up the tempo a few times."
Mainland will be hosting the 5th-annual A Drummer’s Dream Drumline Competition March 19, where six high schools will get just 10 minutes each to wow the judges with their skills.
Though the drumline isn't competing this year, they are doing an exhibition, which they've been working very hard to perfect.
"Some people think we just hit some drums and don't really put any effort in," Dorival said. "But it takes a lot of hard work and dedication."
Though 11th-grader Caleb Wilford was not as inspired by "Drumline" as Dorival was, he does agree with him that people think what they do is too easy. Especially when it comes to rhythm.
"It always came easy to me," he smiled. "But there are a lot of people that take time to get it right. But it always ends up coming together."
