Information received from Family Life Center news release
Family Life Center received a $700 donation from the 2nd Annual Break-Awayz Chili Cook Off and Beach Clean Up at Break-Awayz Tapas Bar and Restaurant in Flagler Beach this past February.
“When we were trying to determine what charity to donate to I posted the question on my Facebook page and my mom Karen Farrell commented back and suggested the Family Life Center,” said Jordan Farrell, one of the event organizers. “When I first learned that there are more sex crimes in Flagler Beach than any other area in Flagler County, mostly due to the ‘bar scene’ in the area, I knew that I had to do something to raise awareness.”
Farrell got together with his friends Kyle Ecker and Tyler Ecker, owners of Break-Awayz, to create the event last year. The event began with a 10 a.m. beach clean up. After the cleanup, participants headed to Break-Awayz. Participants paid $10 to taste and judge 15 crock pots of donated chili. The first year they raised $300.
The winner of the chili cook off was ‘Tiger Rick’ with his wild boar and venison chili. There were nearly 20 Flagler Beach businesses that donated to the fundraiser including Island Grill and Woody’s Bar-B-Q.
“I was so impressed with the giving spirit of Flagler Beach,” Farrell said.,“We were up against some bad weather but still raised double the amount of money we raised last year, so we were happy with the results.”
