Admission to the Flagler County Fair & Youth Show on Friday, Saturday and Sunday will include the “Rock n’ Rib Fest” with live music. The addition is the result of a new partnership with Flagler County Broadcasting radio stations.
“It’s really two great events rolled into one,” Penny Buckles, the Fair Vice President and General Manager, said. “The radio stations are bringing a major concert to the rodeo arena.”
No one has to go hungry at the fair. On Friday and Saturday the Rock n' Rib Fest will be busy selling traditional ribs. On Saturday the third annual Smokin' on the Farm BBQ contest will also have mouths watering.
“We have 15 competitors who will be cooking more meat than they need for us to sell for our fundraiser,” Buckles said.
Barbecue contestants will be setting up on Friday evening and the grills will start smokin' at 4 a.m. Saturday morning. Awards are presented at 5 p.m. Saturday. Dinner is available at 6 p.m.
“This is 4 H- and FFA-based and they serve and help,” Buckles said. “We donate part of the fundraising money back to them.”
Buckles said she expects the addition of live entertainment on Saturday will increase barbecue attendance and the amount raised.
Country music legends “Restless Heart” will take the stage at 8 p.m., Friday, April 8. Local country bands “Patrick Gibson” and “Southern Chaos” will open for the headliner at 5 p.m.
Live music returns Saturday, April 9, with “Kids Rock The Nation” Nova Rex at 4 p.m., followed by Stevie Ray Vaughan Tribute at 6 p.m., and The Ultimate Foreigner Tribute at 8 p.m. The evening will conclude with a firework finale at 9:30 p.m. Tony Thornock, a Gene Simmons impersonator, will also perform.
Sunday, April 10th, is the final day of the fair and will showcase young local talents produced by Narrow Magazine from noon – 4 p.m.
The marriage between the Fair coordinators and the radio station came about when David Ayres, Vice President and General Manager of Kix Country 98.7 & Beach 92.7, was looking for a new group to partner with. If the Kix Country Fair in October is any indication, the new addition to the county fair is sure to be a success.
“We’re really excited about working with the fair and taking it to a new level.” Ayres said. “I asked what they were doing with the arena during the fair and they said, 'nothing.' It was peanut butter and chocolate.”
