On March 4 the annual Flagler Reads Together event began exploring the Appalachian Trail as everyone read “Grandma Gatewood's Walk”

by Ben Montgomery. Montgomery was the first of many guest speakers.

The book is about Emma Gatewood, who in 1955 at age 67 walked the 2,168-mile Appalachian Trail in one season.

Friends of the Library President Terry Jones said she has received a lot of positive feedback about this year's book selection.

“I spoke to the book club last week and one man had walked part of the Trail,” Jones said. “Everyone seems to be thoroughly enjoying it and I think it shows that a 67-year-old can still go out and trail blaze.”

The program is at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 29, in the meeting room at the county library, 2500 Palm Coast Parkway. The guest speaker will be birder, Joe Dziak who will present a PowerPoint and speak on “Local Birds You Can See on Our Trails.”

The event will include a question and answer period and is expected to be about an hour in length. The Friends of the Library will provide light refreshments.

This was the 15th year the library has had a Flagler Reads program and Jones estimated nearly 275 participated in this year's event. Those who weren't able to participate can still check the book out at the library.
