Ormond Beach police responded to 1508 San Marco Drive, Unit 105, about 10 p.m. on March 29 in reference to a domestic dispute. The investigation resulted in the arrest of Jarod D. Stacy, 19, who was charged with domestic violence battery and improper display of a weapon, spokesman Keith Walker said.

According to the incident report, the victim provided a written statement that she had tried to get Stacy to leave the residence, and he threw her to the floor. When a friend of the victim arrived, he pointed a gun at her that turned out to be a BB gun. At that point, the friend called 911.

The suspect was transported to the parking lot of Ormond Towne Square while an arrest report was being completed. The officer partially rolled down the back window, which has safety bars, so the suspect could get fresh air. There were no air conditioning vents in the back seat.

According to Walker, Stacy was able to move the handcuffs to the front of his body and reach outside the window to pull the handle and open the door. The officer wrote in his report that he heard a noise and when he looked around, the door was opening and the suspect ran off.

Stacy fled on foot to a wooded area south of Ormond Towne Square. The arresting officer gave chase but the suspect had too much of a lead. Other officers, including a K9 officer, were unable to locate him. A Volusia County Sheriff’s helicopter was delayed by weather but checked later and also could not find him.

Stacy was found at 9:03 a.m. hiding inside of an unlocked vehicle by officers checking the parking lot of San Marco Apartments, police said. He was arrested and transported to jail with the following charges: domestic violence battery, improper display of a weapon, escape, petit theft and loitering and prowling.
