Kohler grabs student-athlete honor
Seabreeze student Matthew Kohler was honored as the Ormond Beach Lions Club’s April Student-Athlete of the Month. He currently holds a 3.5 GPA, scored 1,600 on the SAT and is on the school’s Honor Roll.
Kohler has earned MVP two years in a row on the school’s wrestling team. He won the district championship and the All American AAU Award. This year he recorded the most takedowns and set the school pin record with an eight-second pinfall.
Kohler He serves as a volunteer in the Prince of Peace’s Thrift Shop and interns at Brown & Brown Insurance Co. He plans to major in Risk Management at FSU.
“There is no finer young man than Matt,” said Seabreeze Principal Joe Rawlings. “His parents did a wonderful job in raising him.”
Mainland volleyball coach steps down
Lady Bucs volleyball coach Sandy Garner recently resigned as coached and has asked Lauren Valle, who runs her own volleyball club, to take over the program.
“I thought it was a good time to make the change,” Garner said. “It will be good for the girls to
learn from someone else. I will have more time to devote to my classes, and it will give me more free time. I also plan on helping the new coach, if needed, with getting things set up before games and making sure we have workers.”
Garner will play on a senior women's volleyball team in the USA Open Volleyball Championships from May 27-29, at the Orlando Convention Center. She hopes her senior team will be able to scrimmage against the Lady Bucs in the future.
The house of winning
Last week, there was much to celebrate about in the Gilbert house. First, Tom Gilbert with Team Reel Crazy headed out to fish in the first leg of the King of the Inlet and caught a 55.4-pound Wahoo that helped win the entire tournament out of 72 teams.
Then, Gilbert’s sister-in law, Mikayla Laks and the Seabreeze Lady Sandcrabs beat rivals Mainland
19-12 to win the district championship and advance to the playoffs. They will play the Harmony Longhorns at 7 p.m. May 6, at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex.
The very next day, Gilbert hit a hole-in-one on a par-3 at Hole No. 5 at the Riverbend Golf Course.
Halifax Rowing
Last month the Halifax Rowing Juniors returned from the State Sculling Championships in Sarasota with three medals.
Ashley Dodd and Paige Jagger, representing the 2x team, won silver, and Alex Grubel and Peter Springer, the boys 2x, won bronze.
Julia Maxwell, Julia Van Cleef, Elisa Manecke and Celeste Sebastien, the girl’s 4x, also won the silver medal.
The boys JV 4x, Grant Wichlei, Dylan Lev, Andrew Filosa and Arman Khazraee, placed fourth.
