All of the running, jumping, vaulting, throwing and all other track activities have come down to the FHSAA Track & Field State Championships, which will be held Friday and Saturday, May 6-7, IMG Academy Stadium in Bradenton.
Last week’s region meet separated the good from the great, and, while many athletes advanced to the state meet, only a few won regional championships. Among those were individuals and teams from Mainland and Father Lopez who have real shots to capture gold silver or bronze medallions to close out their track seasons.
Champions: Lopez: Bailey Gillespy, high jump; Caroline Lydecker, 400-meter run; Nick Theriault, Julian Polviatis, Nick Ohlwein and Noah Willis.
Mainland: Adrian Killins, 200-meter dash; Sa’da Rowley, Josilin Mobley, Danielle Hernandez, Shannon Ruane, 4x400 relay; Malcolm Reed, Alex Mack, Elijah White, Demarcus Adams, 4x400 relay and 400-meter run (Reed).
Each team and individual competitor has a story that has led to this moment, and they all hope for the perfect ending, they atop the championship podium with a golden medallion around their neck.
