Ormond Beach gift-basket winners in the second-annual scavenger hunt called “Rediscover U.S. 1 America’s Business Highway” received their prizes May 6 at City Hall.

Eight Volusia cities along the highway cooperated in the contest, April 15-23, to bring attention to local businesses. Scavenger maps were available at the city halls.

Citizens who took part had to stop at 30 businesses and get an answer to a question to complete the scavenger hunt. Those who correctly completed their forms were entered into a drawing for a gift basket which contained an assortment of items including gift cards.

Karen Todd, of Ormond Beach, said she found some new places to shop.

“The owners took time to show us around and explain their business,” she said.

Her partner on the journey, Sandy Smith, said she found a “lot of hidden treasures” along the highway.

Terri Francis said the hunt was something she and her son, Cameron, had fun doing together.

Claudia Malo, 72, has lived in Ormond Beach since 1973 and said she is interested to see what businesses now occupy the buildings, because she remembers what was there years ago. Plus, she enjoys talking to people.

“I’m a jabberer,” she said.
