State champions
The Seabreeze Sandcrabs' 4x400-meter relay team (Tonette Jackson, Jasmine Taylor, Sarah Myers and Vail Linn) took first place at the FHSAA State Track Meet on Saturday, May 7, in Bradenton. The group also took silver in the 4x100-meter relay.
Boice, Lions’ student-athlete
The Ormond Beach Lions Club honored Brooke Boice as its May and final Student-Athlete of the Month.
Boice, a member of the National Honor Society, made the President’s List for the fall Semester and is a dual-enrollee at Daytona State, where she maintains a 4.1 GPA while majoring in Radiography. She played for the Lady Sandcrabs softball team, maintaining a .316 batting average and was named Defensive Player of the Year in 2014.
Boice serves as president of the Write On! Club. Her community service involvement includes participating in book drives for elementary schools, tutoring young students in reading and participation in Ormond Beach Elementary School’s literacy week.
An undefeated season
The Ormond Beach Apollo 15U soccer team recently concluded an undefeated season with a 5-3-0 record. The Apollo scored 23 goals while only allowing 18 on defense. Riptide’s carnival of flips
Riptide Gymnastics and Cheer will be hosting its grand opening called “Carnival of Flips,” which will be a one-day event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 21, at its new 1203 N. U.S.1 location in Ormond. Call 675-6765.
Halifax Rowing capture Top 10 state finishes
Halifax Rowing Association earned a couple of Top 5 finishes at the Florida Scholastic Rowing Association Sweep State Championships on Sunday, May 1, at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota.
The girls freshman 4+ (Paige Jagger, Ashley Dodd, Julia Maxwell, Julia VanCleef and Vince Leffler-coxswain) took third place; boys’ lightweight team (Peter Springer, Grant Wichlei, Ben Herstein, Dylan Lev and Chris Conlon) placed second in the Petite finals, missing a spot in the grand final by less than .3 seconds; varsity 4+ (Bret Bay, Sam Boyer, Ben Steel, Alex Grubel, and Jasleen Kahlon-coxswain) placed fifth in the Petite finals; and girls’ 2x (Mhari Whyte and Celeste Sebastien) placed sixth in the petite finals.
Also, to celebrate National Learn-to-Row Day, Halifax will be hosting an open house, where it will allow anyone 12 years and older to tour its boathouse, meet the current members, try indoor rowing machines and test skill in a racing shell on from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, June 4, at its 201 City Island Parkway location.
