Simone Till, an eighth-grade student at Indian Trails Middle School, and her partner, Destiny Ritenour from St. Johns County, recently won the Vocabulary Competition in St. Johns County for middle and high school students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
According to Annemarie Paternoster, a teacher of deaf and hard of hearing students with Flagler Schools, DEAFinition Competitions, like the one sponsored by the St. Johns County School District, are invaluable.
“It helps increase knowledge of vocabulary words that are found in all subject areas, literature and assessments,” Paternoster said. “It also provides opportunities for socialization and interactions in a collaborative team approach with peers, as well as a fun atmosphere for students to meet other students who are deaf or hard of hearing.”
