After 32 years in education, and 26 years at Bunnell Elementary School, Richard Dupont is retiring at the end of this school year.

Dupont started as a teacher at Bunnell before becoming principal. At that time, there were 600 students; today, there are more than 1,300 on a new, sprawling campus.

"What I've learned from the kids is just their excitement for life," Dupont said in his cheerful, raspy voice, in a brief interview at the school on May 23. He was there in the cafeteria attending yet another evening activity for his students. "Everything is a new experience for them. Their inquisitiveness is what keeps you going."

Dupont announced on the school's website that he was retiring, along with this statement: "I sincerely want to thank you for your trust and support over these many years. It truly has been an honor and privilege to serve."

In his retirement, Dupont said he plans to try new things and "do some traveling in the USA."
