The Buddy Taylor Middle School Eagles 4H club students, partnered with the Flagler County Extension Service/ UF and IFAS Agents, and participated in the Tri County Agricultural Association’s 4H Potato Project. The project began in January 2016, when BTMS students, and other 4H clubs in the area, planted the seed potatoes The students also learned about the history of the farming of potatoes in Flagler, Putnam, and St. Johns counties, and about the critical components in the planning of fields and planting of potatoes.
During a training day project in February the students learned about crop management, fertilization, and maintenance.
On May 7, the students helped with the harvesting and hand sorting of the potatoes.
The BTMS Eagles 4H club received approximately 600 pounds of potatoes. The students sorted, bagged and sold these potatoes. The project included developing a marketing plan, which included how they could give back to their community.
The students decided to donate 25% of the potato sales, $110, to the Grace Community Food Bank in Bunnell.
