Hillary Clinton wins in Tomoka Elementary School election

The students participated in a nation-wide student voting day Nov. 1.

With their heads barely taller than the cardboard voting booths they stood in, students from Tomoka Elementary School spent Nov. 1 voting for the next president of the United States. 

While some students were more open than others about who they voted for, most remained quiet about their choice and proudly accepted their "I Voted" sticker. After 8 p.m., the votes were in — Hilary Clinton, 333; Donald Trump, 237. 

Ormond Beach Middle School also participated in the campaign, but only 48 students voted. Donald Trump won by four votes. Tomoka is the only school that did a school-wide vote in Volusia County. 

"Their voice is important," said Tomoka Elementary Academic Coach Josie Stumpf. "We also taught them how to get along with people who vote differently than them. I think the way the culture is right now during this election, that's really important." 

In total, Florida had 52,584 votes from students. Clinton won by 13,605 votes. For more information, visit studiesweekly.com.
