American Legion Post 267, the only veterans service organization in Ormond Beach, will have their Veterans Day ceremony at 11 a.m. at their headquarters at 157 New Britain Ave.
The post has four different units of membership: members who served in times of war; an auxiliary of women who have a family member that served in a time of war; Sons of the Legion who are men that have a family member that served in time of war; and Legion Riders who belong to one of the units and like to ride.
While all the members support local charities, the focus of the Legion is on veterans and their families, said Jim Bowers, commander. He said it’s a place for veterans to talk about their problems with other vets. They have a service officer that can help members get the benefits they need.
Of the 581 members, 53 are World War II veterans and 107 are Korean War veterans. Many are Vietnam War vets.
Among the charities they help are Jerry Doliner Food Bank and Halifax Urban Ministries. They send boys to Boys Town each year and also sponsor a Boy Scouts troop.
