Noah Motto
Seabreeze senior kicker Noah Motto proves that not only can good things come during tough situations, but the game of football can be used to influence a greater cause.
Feeling like he hadn't done enough to give to give back, while seeing other college and pro kickers' host fundraisers, Motto felt the need to act as well.
He chose to create a fundraiser around breast cancer because one of his family members died from the illness, and his mother, Michelle, works in a cancer treatment center.
At the beginning of the Sancrabs' football season, Motto set up a site and asked friends and family to pledge any amount for every extra point and field he would convert. Last year, Motto made six field goals and added 12 extra points.
This season both Motto's field goals and extra points declined, but that didn't stop his fundraiser supporters from giving. In just four months, his campaign has raised $970 toward his $1,000 goal.
"Just starting the fundraiser was rough, not knowing how people would react and if I would get any donations," he said. "But I chose to push forward and do it anyways, knowing it's not about me but about treating cancer. Looking back now, I'm glad I made this decision."
While he understands $1,000 isn't enough to end cancer, Motto hopes the money will be instrumental in the American Cancer Society's efforts.
It's always interesting to see how players will show their support in the fight against breast cancer by adding the color pink to their gameday uniforms. But this year, Motto took it a step further, and his teammates, family members and friends rallied behind him by donating to his fundraiser.
Asking people to give their hard-earned money for any cause that personally doesn't affect them is a difficult thing to do. But I'm sure Motto's courage and dedication to this cause will inspire others to give back in various ways, and those who have been affected by this illness will admire his efforts in joining in the fight against breast cancer.
