After Hurricane Matthew took aim at Flagler County on Oct. 6-7, local radio station WNZF spent that entire weekend helping emergency management officials communicate important updates to people who had no power.
Sheriff James L. Manfre told WNZF General Manager David Ayres that he and his hurricane team were vital to helping people receive emergency information during the crisis.
“We were fortunate to have one radio station that provided so much communication with our community,” Manfre said, adding that he told Florida Gov. Rick Scott exactly that when the governor visited Flagler County officials for a debriefing session.
Manfre said that when electronic signals failed to reach cell phones, laptops, tablets and every other kind of computer during days of power outages following Hurricane Matthew, radio technology served a critical role in emergency management.
In addition, WNZF staffers stayed at the Flagler County Emergency Operations Center the entire weekend, broadcasting important interviews with the sheriff, FCSO Director Jim Troiano and other emergency management officials. They shared information about weather forecasts, the shelters opening and closing, roads being closed due to hurricane damage, where to find food and water, and the agonizing wait for bridges to reopen so residents could return home.
