According to Patti and Donald Summerlin, there's nothing quite like the power of the donut.
"We'll get people coming in all sluggish with their heads down, and then we'll start to tell them about our banana pudding donut," Patti Summerlin smiled, "then they perk up."
A longtime fantasy about opening up a breakfast place in Donald Summerlin's beachside hometown combined with the failed quest of finding a quality donut place led the couple to open Donnie's Donuts just over a year ago on Seabreeze Boulevard in Daytona Beach. While they originally planned on using that as their satellite location and opening an additional store in Ormond Beach, Hurricane Matthew put those plans to a halt.
Due to the damages their store suffered in the storm, the donut shop is making our city their home base.
"When we were expanding, we asked people where they think we should go," Patti Summerlin said. "The overwhelming response was Ormond Beach."
The shop will hopefully open at its new location, 200 E. Granada Blvd., in the next six or seven weeks. Donnie's Donuts offers a variety of daily flavors — like the popular maple bacon donut — to choose from, as well as fair-trade organic coffee.
"We're very sad to not be on Seabreeze," Donald Summerlin said. "But we're happy to be in Ormond, and committed to getting our shop open as soon as possible."
Follow the shop on Instagram and Facebook for updates on the store's progress.
