Cindy Lescarbeau is excited about spreading the word about her Christian faith through the performing arts.
“People can see how exciting and relevant it is,” she said “They see a vision of hope. It’s exciting.”
Lescarbeau is the director of FREED Performing Arts, a Christian-based school, which will have its Winter Showcase at 6 p.m. Nov. 18 at Tomoka Christian Church, 1450 Hand Ave. All of their shows are free.
The school is a nonprofit organization that teaches Bible lessons through the arts, including music, dancing, singing, acting, etc. Young people can sign up for classes at the event.
The students work throughout the year toward their spring show, May 3 and 5, at the church. The Nov. 18 performance shows the techniques the students have learned since starting in September, and the May shows are full productions.
“We spend eight months working on the spring show,” Lescarbeau said.
One of last year’s spring shows was standing room only, she said.
In addition to performing shows at Tomoka Christian Church, they also perform at schools or other locations when invited. The school plans to expand their classes to include ukulele, guitar and percussion and they are currently accepting students.
Lescarbeau, who studied dance for 11 years, started the school in her home in 2000 when she saw a need for a faith-based performing arts school. She started with seven students, and there are now 80.
As the school grew, her parents remodeled their garage into a studio. Later, there was a need for more space and she was invited to open her school at Tomoka Christian Church.
“It’s something I’m so happy to be part of,” she said. “I hope 100 years from now, someone is still running it.”
She now has teachers in the different areas of the arts, after recruiting from throughout Volusia County.
“I knew who the best teachers were,” she said. “It was a long pursuit but I ended up getting my choices. I felt God’s hand in it.”
