The Father Lopez Lady Green Wave introduced itself to the 7A District-5 with a 68-20 season-opening win over the Seabreeze Sandcrabs on Monday, Nov. 14, at Seabreeze.
The Green Wave transitioned from the highly talented 4A District-6, home of Highland Prep and Jones, two of Class 4A's top teams.
Lopez's new district foes are Seabreeze, Pine Ridge, Mainland, Deltona, New Smyrna and Atlantic.
After finishing with a 20-6 record last season, the Green Wave returns six players, including top players Madi Camporese and Lexi Duckett — who averaged 16 points last season as a freshman.
"We're expecting to compete for the district championship this year," head coach Brad Ridenour said. "I know New Smyrna won the district and is really good, but we're looking forward to the challenge."
Lopez will next play Holy Trinity Saturday, Nov. 19, at Holy Trinity. The Sandcrabs will look to rebound against New Smyrna at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, at Seabreeze.
Game stats: Green Wave's Taylor Williams led all players with 20 points, six rebounds and four steals. Lexi Duckett followed with 13 points, and Gabby Watson finished with 11 points, seven rebounds and seven steals.
Christen Helem led the Sandcrabs with six points.
