The Flagler Beach Police Department will hold a “Toys for Tickets” for the second year in a row, letting citizens who get a warning citation for a traffic or parking offense to donate a toy in lieu of paying a fine.
“This program was extremely successful last year, when 101 warning citations were issued during the inaugural initiative,” Flagler Beach Police Chief Matt Doughney said in a Flagler Beach Police Department news release. “This is a great way kick off the holiday season after the difficult year we’ve had due to Hurricane Matthew. … The goal of the program is two-fold: to gain compliance with traffic laws and parking ordinances, and to make a difference in the lives of families in our community that need a little help bringing smiles to their children on Christmas morning.”
The program is in partnership with “Christmas Come True,” a Flagler Beach-based non-profit with a mission “to provide a complete Christmas experience for area resident parents who are unable to financially afford a traditional Christmas for their families.”
Beginning Monday, Nov. 14, and continuing through Friday, Dec. 16, Flagler Beach Police Department officers, at their discretion, will be issuing "toy waivers" along with warning citations for non-criminal state traffic and/or city parking offenses.
The “toy waiver” allows the motorist to donate a new, unwrapped toy to “Christmas Come True” instead of facing a potential civil fine.
Motorists who voluntarily choose to participate in the program will be instructed to drop off a new, unwrapped toy between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m Monday through Friday, at the
Flagler Beach Police Department at 204 South Flagler Ave.
Flagler County Sheriff’s Office detectives are investigating a burglary that occurred Nov. 7 at the AT&T store at 1475 Palm Coast Parkway NW, where three male suspects smashed the store’s glass front door and then fled carrying electronics, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release.
A witness told deputies the suspects were wearing dark clothing, and that he saw them flee in a four-door sedan. Just after responding to the scene, deputies spotted a vehicle matching that description — a black Volkswagen Jetta, with Florida tag Y85ISS — driving westbound on Palm Coast Parkway.
Before deputies could overtake the vehicle, the driver lost control and crashed at the Mobile gas station access road.
The three subjects fled on foot. Flagler County’s FireFlight emergency services helicopter responded and helped search for the suspects, but did not find them.
AT&T staff said three high-priced items were missing from the store: an Apple iPhone 7, valued at $749; a Samsung S7, valued at $700; and a Samsung Tab S2 tablet, valued at $500.
The thieves also stole a cash drawer.
Deputies searching the vehicle observed items that were consistent with those taken from AT&T. Detectives are reviewing store surveillance video.
Anyone with any information about the burglary is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 313-4911. Or, to remain anonymous and become eligible for a reward of up to $1,000, call Crime Stoppers of Northeast Florida at 1-888-277-8477.
